You can change your Tesla air filters without a service center. There are a few steps to replacing the cabin filters. This applies to both a Tesla Model Y and Model 3.
Let’s first look at how to change the filters. If you haven’t bought them yet, knowing the process can help you make a better decision. I bought a new Tesla Model Y and have driven it over 34,000 miles. I also almost made a mistake when replacing the filters. This guide can help you avoid any issues…
How to Replace Tesla Air Filters
You’ll find a list of the steps to replace your air filters below. And if you’re more of a visual learner, I’ve also created a short video guide…
Feel free to ask me any questions in the comments section. Here’s a list of the steps…
- Move back the front side passenger seat
- Remove the floor mats
- Take off the panel above the feet area (4 plastic fasteners)
- Disconnect the wires
- Remove the side panel (start with a pry tool)
- Unscrew the air filter cover
- Use the filter pull tabs to remove the old filters
- Put in the new filters (with arrows facing the cabin)
- Reinstall the panels and covers (most pop back into place)
After replacing the filters the first time, it should only take a few minutes to do it again down the road. It’s a small learning curve. But how often should you change your Tesla air filters?
How Often to Change Tesla Air Filters
Tesla recommends changing air filters every 2 years. The owner’s manual doesn’t show when to change them based on miles. Also, this isn’t to be confused with the separate HEPA filters, which Tesla recommends changing every 3 years.
As mentioned, I’ve driven 34,000 miles and this was my first time changing the air filters. I’ve owned the car for over a year and a half. Although, I lived in it most of last year. For another example, another person commented that his first time was after 17 months having driven 43,000 miles.
The 2-year recommendation is not a hard-and-fast rule. The same holds true for other Tesla maintenance such as when to rotate your tires. My Model Y started prompting me to do that 19,000 miles ago. However, my tire treads still look good and have even wear. I use Tesla’s chill mode when driving 🙂
When it comes to replacing your Tesla air filters, a smell check can be a good indicator. However, even if a weird smell doesn’t creep up, it’s still good to change them every so often. But how much will it cost?
Tesla Air Filter Replacement Cost
Both the Tesla Model Y and Model 3 use two cabin air filters. And they both should have the same design (pull tabs in the same spots). This design helps reduce confusion and keeps costs lower.
A company sent me free filters but when starting to install them, I realized they were faulty. The pull tabs were in the incorrect spots, and they weren’t flexible to fit in. So, I bought air filters directly from Tesla. One filter was $17 and that’s $34 for both. They also came with free shipping.
However, with the Tesla Model Y having become the best-selling car in the world, lots of third-party companies are coming in. They’re starting to build and sell many different Tesla products…
Best Tesla Air Filters
If you don’t want to buy air filters directly from Tesla, here are the best ones on Amazon. This is an affiliate link and helps me as a small content creator…
Some come in at a slightly lower cost. However, it’s always good to read the reviews. And if they don’t have lots of good reviews, it’s more likely to be hit or miss. With more time, the best Tesla air filters should climb in these lists.
If you buy any of these Tesla air filters, please leave a review. That helps us all out as Tesla owners. I love seeing any comments on my YouTube videos as well.
Tesla AC and Camp Mode
One huge benefit of EVs is not having to worry about toxic fumes. You can keep your AC running without worrying. And if you use it often, that’s a reason to change your Tesla air filters a little sooner.
Here’s a full guide on Tesla Camp Mode. After living in my Model Y for a year, I have lots of insight to share. They’re great for camping in any weather. Going one step further, here are my favorite Tesla Camping Accessories. Feel free to check them out.
