How to Install Tesla Front License Plate in 2 Minutes

There’s no need to buy a Tesla front license plate holder. When I bought a new Model Y, it was hard to track down this info. Most results show third party holders that cost extra. However, your new Tesla should come with a free license plate holder.

That’s the one I installed, and I’ve driven more than 21,000 miles. The plate has stayed on the front of the Tesla through extreme weather. I’ve driven through deserts, as well as rain and snow storms. The temperature has ranged from –20 F (-29 C) to over 110 F (33 C).

I was worried about it sticking, but so far, no issues. However, it’s important to install it the right way…

Don’t forget to clean and dry the front of your Tesla where you’ll mount the plate holder. Many people recommend using a microfiber cloth as well. And once you’ve cleaned and dried the front of your Tesla, the mounting tape creates a stronger bond.

The license plate frame is also a sturdy material that the engineers have formed to the front of the car. This creates a continuous bond with the strips of adhesive tape.

On top of that, there’s no drilling or damage to your Tesla. It comes with little screws, but these attach your license plate to the plastic holder. You won’t need to drill them into the body of your car.

If you’ve gotten this far with your research, it might be good to double check license plate rules…

Do You Need a Front Tesla License Plate?

The answer to this question depends on the state you live in. As of writing this, I’ve found 29 states that require a front plate. Here’s a list…

  • Idaho
  • Illinois
  • Iowa
  • Maine
  • Maryland
  • Massachusetts
  • Minnesota
  • Missouri
  • Montana
  • Nebraska
  • Nevada
  • New Hampshire
  • New Jersey
  • New York
  • North Dakota
  • Oregon
  • Rhode Island
  • South Dakota
  • Texas
  • Utah
  • Vermont
  • Virginia
  • Washington
  • Wisconsin
  • Wyoming

With this list in view, it’s still best to check with your state’s official requirements. It’s hard to keep up to date with all the legal changes.

Also, when traveling, do you need a front plate if just passing through? In most cases, you’ll only need to meet the plate requirements of the state you’ve registered in. It’s fine to drive a one plate car in a two-plate state if you’ve registered legally elsewhere.

You don’t need to buy a fancy license plate holder. I’m living proof of that… with plenty of miles on the road. And starting out, I found the plate holder in the back trunk of my new Model Y. Although, others have mentioned finding it elsewhere in their new Tesla.

If you have any questions, please comment on any of my YouTube videos. I’ve shared my journey across the U.S. and to keep costs low, I camped in my Tesla Model Y most nights. So, to say the least, I’ve learned a thing or two.
