The Tesla Model Y glass roof gives a great view of the sky. However, there are two reasons I’ve decided to use a roof shade. It helps with heat and provides some privacy.
Do you ever wonder if truck drivers have a full view when driving by? I asked this question in my video. Hopefully we get an answer in the comments…
Tesla Roof Shade Review
While I’m driving, I’m not worried about others being able to see inside my car. However, the roof window covers are more useful when car camping, especially when stealth car camping. One benefit is that they help block sunlight in the morning.
Although, the main reason I’ve started using Tesla roof sunshades is to help with heat. On hot summer days, any help is a win in my book. It might also help reduce wear and tear or fading in the interior. From a personal safety standpoint, the Tesla glass roof already has good UV and other light protection in place. So, that wasn’t a big concern.
How to Fold Tesla Roof Shades
The Tesla Model Y roof is one continuous piece of glass, unlike the Model 3. However, most Model Y sunroof shades still come in two pieces. These can be a bit tricky to fold, but they’re not bad once you get the hang of it.
To fold the covers, grab opposite corners and twist. If it doesn’t fold, you might need to reposition your hands and twist the other way. Once folded, they don’t take up much room to store in your Tesla or elsewhere.
Tesla Model Y Sunshade Material
The outsides are a stronger material that bends. And when unfolded, the inside fabric material goes out flat. It doesn’t sag and stays close to the glass roof once you’ve installed it.
The sunshade material has a reflective side that faces up, and it’s dark on the bottom. It helps prevent the sun from getting in and bouncing around the Tesla.
It’s not a heavy material so it doesn’t provide insulation. I plan to keep it up most of the summer and take it down for the winter. And that brings me to one big benefit… it’s easy to install and takedown.
How to Install Tesla Roof Sunshade
The sunshades came with clips that fit on the edges. There’s a flat side that should face up when putting them on. To install both the front and back sunshades, I’ll pop on a few clips and then push them into the top of the roof. Then I add the others clips and push the other sides into place.
There shouldn’t be any damage from this. No screws or other damaging fasteners. The clips slip right into the gap between the glass window and the interior trim. Although, holding it up and putting these in place can take some trial and error.
Is the Tesla Roof Shade Worth It?
On hot days, leaving your Tesla out in the sun can push the interior temp to well over 100°F (38°C). You can vent the windows from the app, and this helps a little. You can also run the AC but that runs down the battery.
If you live in an area with lots of sun and hot days, it might be a good idea to pick up Tesla roof sunshades. If you drive with a dog and other passengers, that might be more of a motivator as well.
A company called Yeslak sent these Tesla roof shades to me for free. They have lots of Model Y products. And to explore more Tesla sunshades, here are top rated ones on Amazon (affiliate link). This list also includes front window covers as well.
If you’re finding free Tesla charging, you might have some cash to spare. There are lots of options right around $50. That’s not a lot and can help reduce wear and tear in your tesla, as well as keep you a little more comfortable.

Tesla Model Y Cost and Accessories
Did you get a good deal when you bought your Tesla? Here’s the complete Tesla Model Y price history. That has a chart that shows the price changes. With millions of Teslas on the roads, prices have come down. But will this continue?
Even if you paid a higher price, it’s a good trend to see. More companies are competing to create and sell accessories. This gives us more options, such as the many different Tesla Model Y roof shades. I’m also hoping all the new demand lowers repair costs. The Model Y has become one of the best-selling cars, and I expect this to continue. I wouldn’t be surprised to see it reach the number one spot.
